How to Deliver Stand-out Employee Training and Development Programs

Wednesday, 11th Mar, 2020

Employees want to be developed.  They want to be engaged.  And statistics prove this again and again!  According to the Gallup poll, 70% of US workers are not engaged in their current role.  40% of employees that receive poor job training leave within their first year (Access Perks).  68% of employees say training and development programs are a company’s most important policy.

So what can you do to improve training and development at your company?

1. Membership Organizations – Is your company a part of a membership organization for your industry?  Typically, the cost of the membership includes the training and education updates to help keep your employees informed of what is going on in their industry.

2.Books! – Good old fashioned BOOKS are a great way to give employees access to knowledge and education.  You may consider setting up a business library or starting a book club.  This not only gives employees access to information, it also encourages socializing and building bonds with other employees.

3.Use What You Have – You probably have stars on your team and subject matter experts that can train on a variety of subjects.  Google uses this method of employees teaching employees (they call it Googler to Googler learning programs).  It’s a great way to recognize employees for their expertise, allow them to really learn the material (nothing teaches you like teaching), and provide a more robust training program.

4.Mentoring – Similar to the above, engage your existing star performers to work with other employees.  Create a mentoring program that allows both parties to benefit.

5.Use New Platforms – Training and development does not have to be the traditional seminar-style training.  There are so many programs out there that allow you to deliver training in a variety of ways to decrease cost, increase participation and engagement, and increase retention of knowledge.  At Ascentech, we have a Microlearning spaced-out learning System that allows employees to take training in bite-sized chunks.

6.Networking Partners – Do you have networking partners that are interested in providing training and education in their fields of expertise? Similar to accessing your employee pool, accessing your network may prove to be very effective.

7.Outsource your training!  – Outsourcing for certain areas of expertise or for facilitation may make a lot of sense for your company.  At Ascentech we provide many different types of training and development programs for our clients.  Check out our full employee and leadership development course list for 2020.
